The workshop on Cryomethods, Ultracryotomy and Immunolabeling will be organized in our laboratory from June 29 till July 8, 2011 (including the weekend) in collaboration with Leica Microsystems, Vienna.
The 10 days program of the course will start with a 2 day optional part for participants (maximum 8) who have no experience with standard EM techniques and will deal with the preparation of semi and ultrathin sections of resin embedded material. The actual cryo-workshop will be given for 20 students (maximum). It starts with an introduction to cryo-techniques on the third course day. Lectures by experts in the field will be given about high pressure freezing, freeze substitution and the Tokuyasu technique. Training in ultracryotomy and immunolabeling will be the major issue. Under guidance of the skilled staff of the Utrecht Cell Microscopy Center, the complete Tokuyasu technique, including the latest modifications introduced in Utrecht, will be practiced on days 4 till 10. The fine details of the technique are practiced in the lab, where most of time will be spent. Biological samples and immuno-reagents will be available, but students can also bring their own specimens and antibodies for sectioning and labeling during one of the later days. The Utrecht staff may be consulted for fixation of such material.
In the course fee of 1650 Euro the 2 day at the beginning are included. Those who do not attend the prologue can start the on day 3 and pay a fee of 1400 Euro. The course language is English.

Available equipment: 2 x Reichert Ultracut E, 3x Leica Ultracut S/ with cryo-attachment, 2x Leica Ultracut T with cryo-attachment, 1x Leica UC6/FC6 1x Leica UC7/FC7, Leica EM pact II, Leica AFS. Leica IGL. JEOL electron microscopes, 2 FEI electron microscopes equipped for tomography and supporting equipment.
